Why Email Marketing Is Important For Hip-Hop Artists

Believe it or not, email is still one of the most common ways that people communicate on the internet. Email marketing is also one of the most profitable channels for marketing your business to those who’d like to hear from you.

Now, you may be asking yourself “Why would I use email marketing – I don’t have a business, I’m a rapper”. Well, you don’t have a business, you are the business – and if you want to grow your music career and become successful, you’re going to want to be using email marketing.

Why Email Marketing Is Important For Hip-Hop Artists

Did you know that your social media accounts could get hacked, banned, or just deleted for no reason at all? I’m sure you did because not only did I talk about it in these tips for becoming a rapper, it happens to celebrities all the time.

They wake up, proceed to have a normal day and then poof – it’s all gone. Now, in a lot of cases, they have the right connections and are able to make a few phone calls to get things back online. But, you don’t have that luxury, at least not yet.

So, you should be asking yourself this question: “If I lost all of my social media accounts, would I still be able to satisfy my fans?”

If that answer is “no”, email marketing is going to be your best friend. However, that’s not the only reason email marketing is important for hip-hop artists.

Email marketing is cheap

It’s Cheap

Email marketing is extremely cheap compared to other marketing channels. For example, Mailchimp will allow you to have 2000 subscribers for free. That’s 2,000 people that you can email at any time and build relationships with, for $0.

You may be thinking “But, social media is free too” and I don’t blame you, social media is free. But, you don’t own your social media accounts – you own your email list and no one can take that from you.

And, just in case you’re unfamiliar with email marketing, you don’t have to email them 1-by-1 – you can email all 2,000 people at the same time or split them up into smaller groups (this is called email segmentation).

its more effective

It’s More Effective

Email marketing is almost always more effective at promoting your music and communicating with your audience than other channels. Each email you send goes directly to your fans without the noise and distractions associated with social platforms.

how i've used email marketing

How I’ve Used Email Marketing for Myself & Clients

To Gain Traction

Whenever a client releases a new song or project, we send out an email to their fan base. This initial email helps their release gain traction, get a good boost of views, social shares, and feedback.

Then, we send an email out a few days later and ask a group of our most loyal fans (which is based on metrics we track) for their opinion on the song.

For Getting Celebrities Attention

I’ve used my email list for promoting my articles and content, but I’ve also used it to help get the attention of celebrities on social media.

You can attempt at contacting celebrities via social media by just tweeting them or sending them snaps, but it’s not effective. You’ll blend in with everyone else that’s trying to contact them but when you have ten’s or hundred’s of people contacting the celebrity with a similar message, they’re more likely to listen to what you have to say.

So, I’ve sent emails out to my list with new content and asked them to tweet a celebrity to let them know I’ve mentioned them in an article. Now, Instead of the celebrity receiving 1 tweet from me, they’re receiving a lot more tweets from different people and this usually gets their attention.

  1. The three ideas I have to use email marketing are
    1) sending emails to numerous potential fans for something free(music)
    2) creating a strong community through controlled conversation with subscribers
    3) giving discounts to my subscribers as incentive for being a part of my community
    What you think?

  2. One way to use emails is to spend time connecting with your fans, and make it as if what you are doing is special to you, and to them. Second would be a link your songs, but to give a background on why you did that song and who it is for, showing that you are personal and actually care for what you’re doing with rap. Finally, one would be to ask what and where you’re main fan base is (that is if you are a local artist), and try to do a gig or a meet up of some sort.

    Man that’s what I’d do.

    • You have some great ideas! Promoting your music to your email list and including some background on why you did the song and why it’s important to you is excellent. I know a few artists that currently do this successfully.

Also, one beautiful thing about collecting emails is that you’ll be able to see a lot of information about your subscribers. For example, you should be able to see what area they signed up to your list from and then sort everyone based on location. So, you’ll be able to see where your most loyal fans are and do a meetup or gig.

PS: Doing a meetup is such a great way to build a relationship with your fans.

  3. Give back to those fans who sign up. Everybody likes free items in return whether it be they having exclusive links to songs before anybody else or giving away hard copies!

    • That’s a good strategy. You could possibly even release most of your music to your email list 24hrs before releasing it & let them be the first to share it with the public.
